Contains a plastic bag of 3.52 ounce Bonito flakes (jikabiyaki honkatsu)
Could be used as a base stock for soups and broths
Product of Japan
3.3 ounces. (100 gram) bag. Although bonito is one of the most important fish in Japanese cuisine, it is rarely eaten as the entre of a meal. Instead, the dark, oily fish is carefully dried and shaved into very fine, intensely flavored flakes known as katsobushi. These salty flakes are combined with kombu seaweed to make dashi, the base stock for most Japanese soups and broths. Dashi is present in so many Japanese foods that the cuisine would hardly be the same without it. The strong, clean fish flavor of katsobushi makes it a wonderful seasoning for wakame seaweed salads, for seasoning chilled tofu, and for sprinkling over steamed or sauted vegetables.

I give this to my cats as a treat for good behavior ( and yeah, I know...cats and good behavior used in the same sentence is an oxymoron). It's the only thing I've ever used to successfully bribe a feline into doing what I want it to do....but it works. It's the "Crack" of kitty treats. I've managed to teach one of them to do a few tricks ( which really embarrasses the other one ) using this product. I can even entice them to come out of hiding when they're in the garage so I can move the car out. I can't recommend this highly enough.
My cat Mascara ADORES these! We give them to her every morning, She doesn't like them when we get to the very bottom and they are no longer fluffy (much like potato chips in the bottom of the bag). So, I put the crumbs in her dry food, and order her another bag. She's been eating these for about 4 years and has never turned them down (expect the crumbs from the bottom of the bag). I feel they are good nutrition for her. They are loved by the Japanese people and they use them for bases in soups and broth and as a topping on various dishes. This bag lasts a long time, I buy about 3-4 a year. A great, healthy, cat treat! Just fish and seaweed.
Received the package in great condition, the flakes are very large and well kept. I know some places will carry flakes that are shredded to almost dust, but this is absolutely not the case here at all. Smelled fresh, made a great dashi for my miso soup. But to be totally honest, I didn't originally buy this for the soup, I bought it for onigiri.
Literally the best okaka filling I've ever eaten was made from these flakes.
