Additional Information

"European Discovery Tour” was the title on the travel brochure. But as Ann Birstein knew, the journey that she signed up for included a discovery of the most unhappy places on the continent. Her little tour group, most all of them Jewish, was shepherded not only to some of Eastern Europe’s grandest locales but also to its most terrible, including the remnants of the Warsaw Ghetto, Auschwitz, and other grim reminders of the Holocaust and the lost Jews of Europe. Along the way in what became a search for her own soul, Ms. Birstein offers a moving perspective on a tragic people trapped by history.

An American Jew, author Ann Birstein joined a group of Jews on a tour of Jewish sites in Eastern Europe. The tour included the famous big cities of Poland, Lithuania, (formerly) Czechoslovakia, and Hungary, countries where many of the infamous concentration camps of the Holocaust were located. The group and their guide, Uri, an Israeli, visited synagogues and Jewish museums in cities almost devoid of Jews, testimony to how few European Jews survived the Holocaust. They also visited the concentration camps and the most infamous death camp of all: Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The author's account of the tour was part-travelogue, grim as it was, but equally interesting were the other seventeen travelers on the tour. Each had their own motivation for making the trip. Max and Rita had actually survived the Holocaust, emigrated to America, and were returning to Poland for the first time in fifty-seven years. Others ranged in age from their twenties to the seventies.

I don't even know how I stumbled across this book but I'm so glad I did. Extremely thoughtful and wonderfully written, it held my attention and taught me new things about the Holocaust. Thank you, Ann, for taking me along on your journey.
Moving, painful, still incredible - this is a piece of human history that can always bear repeating.
Ann Birstein's family history is woven into the horrors of the past in a way that sharpens the unbearable reality.
