Kate's Outlaw is an enjoyable, fast read, with characters that are believable, warts and all. Like a previous reviewer, I was skeptical about any self-respeting woman falling in love with her abductor (which isn't as bad as a heroine falling for her rapist... a scenario that sets my hair on fire).
But E.E. Burke's Kate Parsons is an above-average gal in the smarts department who quickly realizes Jake is more her protector than her captor. Her attraction to him is understandable once you realize Jake is the first man to want her for her alone, and not for whom she's related.
Meanwhile, Jake, in addition to being photo-shopped gorgeous, is thoughtful and patient. A lesser man might have been tempted to gag Kate (who I mentally named The Relentless). Instead Jake just dryly compares her to a woodpecker... Peck, peck, peck, which made me chuckle. Though tempted, Kate never gives up... either on her dream for the Katy Railroad nor on finding a way that she & Jake can...
Jake, a half breed Cherokee, and his cousin Charlie were robbing the train when Kate Parsons stumbled upon them. Charlie wanted to kill her and, in order to save her life, Jake mumbled something about a ransom and took her prisoner. Then he had to figure out how to keep her safe from Charlie and get her back where she belonged before the army descended on them. Kate Parsons was the daughter of the railroad owner, but she had never felt that her father valued her. She thought people considered her plain, blunt, and opinionated, so that's how she viewed herself. However, she knew she was smart with a good head for business, but her father never listened to her because she was a girl. Henry Stevens, chief of operations, was courting her and Kate felt it was a business move on his part and had nothing to do with love. Jake was very attracted to her, especially her red hair. He called her Redbird, and when he sent his cousin back to hide their trail and took off with her,...
I love the old west, the cowboys and Indian days. I felt Ms. Burke’s captured the setting and had a wonderful plot. She brought to life one of the best times in history with a nice wonderful romance story of trust, passion, when women were little more than there not allowed to do or have a say. The character of Kate was a wonderful strong character who wouldn’t take no for an answer and worked her way to get what she wanted by giving up something she thought she wanted but found wasn’t important as she thought. You will love Kate she is a very touching wonderful character with a kind heart and a stubborn head.
Jake is such a wonderful man, he might be part Indian but he has the heart of a lion and a mind of a wolf. He just wants to help his people keep what is theirs and keep peace. He will do it by the white man’s law fight fire with fire. He doesn’t want to kidnap Kate but he has little choice it is either take her or let his cousin kill...
