For the past few years we've vacationed at a campground near a beach. Some years there's wind and rain and some not and we use a humongous tarp to cover both our tent and picnic table. We bought cheap collapsable aluminum poles last year to help hold up the tarp where there are no trees. Salty sea air and sand grinding into the pole parts began corroding them within a day and when we got them home, we could barely get them apart to clean them out. And they never stayed up properly, they always collapsed, go figure. This year, we splurged on these Kelty poles after I did some research. We just used them this past week and they stayed extended, are extremely lightweight, versatile and I am in love with these poles. Who cares what color they are since they can be used for just about any thing - supporting hammocks in sand, propping up heavy tarps, creating a clothesline...and much more. Since the sections are connected with an internal bungee line and the ends fit inside each other, if... Read more
I have the 16x16 Noah's Tarp and the are a must have for this tarp. I only have two poles and I bought a MSR pole. The MSR pole is not worth the time or effort other than it can help with a different configuration, but it is not tall enough or strong enough to do the job. I just used the poles this weekend in serious wind and rain and the poles performed beautifully and you can read my review of the tarp here on Amazon as well.

My pros and con are as follows:

-Forget taking these anywhere of distance in a backpack. there are big and bulk. They stick out of the top of my 60 liter pack. Depending on the trip very short distances maybe.

-These are strong poles and can handle a big tarp in adverse conditions if anchored properly.

-Adjustable with click buttons, this pole can go high.

There are time I want to leave the EZ-ups at home and these poles give me that option. I have two now but will probably get two more in the future.
The top insert with the tarp pin can be pulled with a vice-grip or channel lock pliers. The shock cored is knotted on that end. Use a towel to reduce plier teeth marks. It takes a firm grip, but you don't need to crush it. Twist and pull. The bottom end of the shock cord is held in place by a washer that won't pass the insert on the bottom shaft. The shock cord is looped through the hole in the washer. The washer is just loose in there.
