Classic styling, impeccable wood selection and attention to every detail makes the Kentucky FM-1050 mandolin an ideal choice for the professional or the committed enthusiast. In terms of appearance, it invokes the best of the 1920s mandolins that are so treasured today. With its gradually fading tobacco sunburst finish, its impeccably rendered scroll and its ornate headstock, it bears all of the pride in craftsmanship a player wants from his or her instrument. You will, however, notice some distinctions between those highly favored 90-year-old mandolins and the Kentucky FM-1050. Mandolin players, especially those proficient in playing other fretted instruments with wider string spacing will appreciate the new KM-1050. At first glance, this new master-level mandolin shares similar specifications to the popular KM-1000, but looking more closely you will discover a few more player-friendly features first pioneered by Saga and Kentucky mandolins in the late 1970's as a result of collaborations with the best mandolin players of the day. These features include an ebony fingerboard with a compound radius, a wider nut and saddle for more comfortable string spacing, frets that are taller and wider than those found on vintage instruments and a skillfully scooped fingerboard extension with inlaid nickel-silver fret markers to retain a traditional look. All combine to make for a mandolin with a playability that is unmatched. Like other Master Model Kentucky Mandolins, the body of the KM-1050 features a hand-carved and graduated Adirondack spruce top, and a back, sides and slim comfortable neck made of select Northern maple to assure the best tone possible. it will be hard to find a better F-model mandolin on the market today that represents the quality and value of America's new Favorite...the KM-1050!

Great mando if you can catch a price break... at $1.5k, it's still a good buy but then I become tempted to pick up a used Collings a-body as the price goes up beyond that.
The good: playability is top notch, intonation is spot on, aesthetics are pleasing to the eye, volume is good, incredible resonance and sustain, sound is balanced between the low (g) string and the high (e) string and bass is decent for such a small size. Chops and palm mutes can fill a room with rhythm. This mandolin is excellent for someone that can appreciate subtlety; the slightest pressure on the top (such as a hand resting) has a significant impact on the sound as does the slight difference in timbre as you pick closer to or further away from the bridge. You can get a lot of different sounds out of these mandolins if nuances and decorative playing are desired.
The bad: mostly a solid and flawless build, but some of the binding is sloppy at the joints... nothing that detracts from the...
Outstanding tone and volume. Check out the specs as they are impressive for a Mandolin at this price point. Chinese made but with nice wood and pretty decent fit and finish. Has the tone of a Mandolin costing 4x the price. Be sure to set the string height up around 5-6/64" on the G string at the 12 th fret and it will really bark. Check out other comments at [...]
SURPRISED THAT THE KM1050 ARRIVED COMPLETELY SET UP! I COULDN'T ASK FOR A BETTER SETUP. ALSO THE PACKAGING WAS OVER THE TOP..NOW,, FOR THE KM1050,,,I HAD PLAYED ONE LAST NOV. AND THOUGHT I WOULD GET ONE FOR MYSELF...I OWN A GIBSON AND HAVE PLAYED FOR AROUND 40 YRS. THE KENTUCKY HAS A SIMILAR TONE AND AT LEAST THE SAME VOLUME. THE FIT & FINISH IS EXCELLENT. I HAD BEEN LOOKING AT A NORTHFIELD F5S WHICH RETAILS FOR AROUND $3000.00 THE KENTUCKY IS A BETTER MANDOLIN FOR 1/2 THE PRICE!! SO,, YES,,I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!! EASY TO PLAY WITH THE RADIUS BOARD,,AND LARGE FRETS. YOU WON'T BE DISAPOINTED!!
