On a bitterly cold January evening, Tracy Ellis went for a jog along Chicago’s snowy lakefront and disappeared. Her body is discovered days later, her beautiful face bashed in with a rock. Police determine her brutal death to be a mugging gone wrong and drop the matter into their cold case files.

Over a year later, Tracy’s sister, Sondra, still can’t come to grips with what happened. She throws herself into her work as a documentary filmmaker to try and forget the cruelty of her sister’s death. However, a chance encounter with a man from Tracy’s past rips the wound open and sends Sondra on a desperate search for answers about the secrets from her sister’s life that may have led to her death.

I read a lot, but don't write many reviews. Had to on this book. We were told the main characters were black and the writer did not have to mention it again and again and again in each chapter. I felt the writer was trying to make it longer with all her detailed descriptions. It needed more details on the storyline and developing the characters instead of ad nauseum descriptions on weather, clothing, scenery, etc. Story had potential, BUT (and this is a BIG BUT) we did not need to know every petal on every flower, every leaf on every tree, every size 2 waist on the characters -- you get my drift. Found myself skimming and skimming and skimming, just to get to the end.
This has to be the best debut novel ever. I was hooked. It's been so long since a book has had me that enthralled. I burned my fish reading this book. When I had to use the restroom, I ran there and ran back as if I would miss something. This book had my head gone. If anyone likes a good mystery/thriller/suspense, then this is the book for you. I love that you learn relatively early on who the "murderer" is, but the plot continuously unfolds until the very last page. You can hardly trust any characer in the story. I loved it! Excellent. 5 stars!
A five star story, made less by focussing on a particular race. This is a story for women of all ages, races and income brackets; however, it almost discounted many women by the discriminatory remarks. This was a story for all women, not just "black". I've been there myself and my skin is the "wrong color. Inequality is a social issue. I believe the author was trying to bring the political issues to light. She might be better off writing to a larger population than excluding or alienating so many others who would otherwise have identified with the story. Being color blind, I found the constant references to " blacks", distracting. The references took my focus away from what I consider a thrilling story. Was I not supposed to read this? I enjoyed the story itself, but again felt like I was supposed to feel guilt and it felt wrong to identify with the characters . I would not read more from this author but it was a good story.
