Sept. 2011. I did not know these batteries have a history of leaking until now! My Pentax SLR camera was not used for 4 months - took it out of the file cabinet in my dry office and saw white powder around the battery case. Battery acid all over the inside of the battery case. The batteries were date stamped good until May of 2015. Am taking it to the Costco returns desk - will they pay to have my camera cleaned/repaired? Check back for the answer in a few days....
Nov. 2011, Finally got my camera back - $278 repair bill and Costco paid for it! Once again Costco acts like a quality American Company, I wish more did!
We just had a major power outage. I grabbed my 4 Stanley tripod flashlights which are perfect for power outages. Three didn't work so I went to change the batteries and found them all full of the white powder typical of leaking batteries. They leaked so badly (and expanded) it took me several minutes to get the batteries out. The "best if installed by" date on the batteries is March 2016. The one flashlight that worked fine had Duracell Coppertop batteries installed. The only words I can think to write are "never again". Honestly, if you live in an area where some act of god or accident may cause power outages check your flashlights - if they have Kirkland AA batteries give yourself some peace of mind and change them out for another brand.
Edit - I went to Costco yesterday with a few "best if installed by 2016" leaking Kirkland AA batteries and they refunded me the purchase price for the last set I purchased, so kudos to Costco. However, I'm pretty sure it's because I...
All these Kirkland AA batteries leak and wreck anything you put them in via corrosive damage. I can even see corrosion on a new unused battery in the pack with an expiration date printed on the battery of "Best if Installed by Dec 2022"! Would you say Costco came up a little shy of their performance goal?
It is reckless and unconscionable on Costco's part that they did not perform due diligence to assure their product was of comparable or superior quality to competitive AA batteries in the marketplace, when in fact it is the lowest quality battery I have encountered in 60+ years. We consumers use these batteries in a wide variety of devices, some of which are very costly, and rightfully have the expectation that these batteries will perform satisfactorily. It is reckless on Costco's part that they would sell a battery of such low quality that can result in such severe consequences as ruining the subject devices.
