I've had other Thule chains before but this one without a doubt is the easiest to get on and off. I've only used it a couple of times but so far it's been great. There is a BIG WARNING I must give about this product. If you put the chains on and engage the lock (step down on the lever) and do not drive so that the chains lock into place there will be a huge amount of tension built up in the bar. If you release the chains with this tension, the plastic Thule handle that you stepped on to lock the chains in place will shoot up that center bar like a projectile. If your fingers are in the way, YOU WILL GET HURT! I learned this the hard way. The lesson.. even when learning how to put the chains on if you step down on the level pull the car forward and let the chains engage all the way. If you do that, the chains will release without the handle snapping back up the bar track.
Couple things. First and foremost the product i received had been used and returned, box resealed, the bar with the slider chipped up etc. I purchased new and probably should of whined/returned since i paid "new" prices. Snow came too quickly however. I have gotten to use them (for a total of 30 minutes), but they did work fantastic in the snow. I was driving past many stuck vehicles, 4x4's etc. I live on a hill so after getting to the bottom of the hill i have to remove them. (since the snow is typically not deep enough at the bottom to warrant chains) The first time i used them they came off no problem. The second time however, one of them would not release. I spent an hour screwing with it to finally get the main red latch to release (much panic , calling work about being late, debating on driving on the freeway at 25, cutting my brand new 400 dollar chains off, etc- it sucked) The primary red latch responsible for releasing the slider is made of plastic and feels... Okay, it's finally time for my review. First off I must say that I am a Grandma of two boys. We just moved from the beach to the mountains. Before purchasing these chains, I was scared to death to drive in the snow. We live on a very steep street and once the ice set was a nightmare. There was no way, no how that I was making it up that hill. I searched and searched for chains that I could do myself. I decided to bite the bullet and pay the big bucks. After watching several YouTube videos (a must) I felt I could do it. really is as simple as they say. We had 4 feet of snow and ice covered the hwy's. These chains gave me the confidence that I needed to drive with my precious cargo. Now it's time to take them off. Again after watching several videos (a must) my eldest Grandson (12) and I went for it. I must say, they were a little harder to get off then put on. If you do it exactly like the video shows you's a piece of cake. I read reviews where people said... Read more
