LIFE IS GOOD follow us: A family kayak odyssey 7,300 km from Copenhagen to Istanbul
What would you do?
When Lars Simonsen lost his job and his house, he chose Plan B and took his family on the longest expedition by Hobie kayak ever attempted, and the longest by kayak with a young family. Lars and his partner Suzi sold their furniture and belongings, took their son Tiuri (7) and daughter Liva (5) out of school and hit the water. The plan – to paddle and sail over 7,000 kilometres from Copenhagen to Istanbul.
The family made their way along the coastlines and down the waterways of Europe, travelling through 9 countries, crossing the busiest shipping lanes of Europe, and dodging the Turkish Coast Guard. Forced out of their home in the wake of the economic crisis, Lars and Suzi sailed headlong into another crisis, as refugees poured out of Syria and into Europe, and the people of Greece suffered under the collapse of their economy.
Despite the troubles affecting Europe, Lars and Suzi were encouraged and inspired by the people they met in each country, welcoming this crazy Danish family into their arms, their homes and their lives.
Read Lars and Suzi’s story and meet the people of Europe who showed this Danish adventure family that life is indeed good.
