I like the hero much more than the heroine. At times, I just want to shake her - she draws some weird conclusions and flits off in a way that strikes me as immature. He is more reasoned. I like a restrained but tortured hero, so I'm predisposed to like him. However, the biggest complaint I have with this is that it is an effort to wade through at times. Some chapters move along nice and quickly and others are slow. I often find myself glancing down at the progress bar on my kindle thinking "you've got to be kidding me, where else is she taking this story?" (and not in a good way). The story should be over in about 320 pages and instead it meanders on for over 400. I'm still trudging through it (we're on the ship, heading to Louisana now), so it's retained my interest to a certain extent, but I'm not dying to read the next one in the series unless her editor takes her in hand.
Best I can say is that it was entertaining at times. H and HH had potential. Nice backstory that unfortuntely was not really explained enough for me. perhaps a flashback to their first kiss, or his condemning speech which estranged them. It was kind of over-dramatic at times, inserting characters that only muddled the waters.
Still I respect most authors efforts, I probably would have given it a 4 star, but hero is often described as doing ANYTHING for the love of his Amelia, yet when push comes to shove, his love seems cheap. Example: Amelia runs away to the country somewhere and he is "desperate" to find her, and yet will not venture to far to search for her. Or when they are about to marry and he ponders to himself how he would give "HALF" of his fortune to have her, (not "ALL"?).
Hero bordered on week, heroine bordered on high-maintenance. Secondary characters Bibi and Norwick seemed deeper, more complicated and interesting, yet their story is not given it's...
I agree with the other reviewer who gave this one star. The story does not flow well, feels like you started in the middle of the story and has absolutely no follow through with the set-ups. I felt like halfway through the book the story totally changed. Amelia is also a horrible character and shows herself as completely unworthy of the hero. There is nothing admirable, consistent, or even interesting about Amelia, she is completely BLAH. She blows hot and cold, has no faith in the guy, and is always angry at HIM for not understanding her. The best friend character was much more deserving of her own story, at least she had emotions and a bit of spine. It took me weeks to finish this book, and when I enjoy them I read them in a day. I just couldn't bring myself to pick it up at the end of the day. Boring!
