This was my first wooden ship project. I found the it both challenging and rewarding. I do think that the project required a great amount of skill. I would not have attempted this advanced level kit as my first ship if I did not have decades of handy man skills at my disposal. Or I would have purchased a simpler kit to begin with. An example of skills and tools required is the tapering of the masts. One mast for example was originally 8mm in diameter and needed to be tapered to 6 mm at the other end. I used a belt sander to accomplish the task. The instructions suggested it be tapered by sanding by hand. That would have taken a long time. Also there was a lot of rigging that needed to be threaded with a needle. So if you have a hard time working with small objects than this might not be the project for you. There was not a single piece of plastic included in the entire kit which is just awesome this day and age. The included flag is a little cheesy looking. It would be nice to...
This ship is the most intricate model kit I have ever seen! There are wooden planks to lay down individually for the siding and the deck! This is a model that requires time and a lot of patience. It is sure beautiful though.
This is a beautiful model. As with most wooden model ship kits the instructions are not the best, (most are manufactured overseas and the translations in the instructions reflect that,) but with planning, some thought, and referencing the photo pamphlet, parts list and minimal instructions you can complete this model with little difficulty. This is an INTERMEDIATE model, not advanced as suggested by another reviewer. It took me only a month to complete. It has a double planked hull, for which I would seriously recommend the purchase of a plank bender, though I managed to complete the task without one. I am purchasing one for my next model as I enjoyed building this one so much I purchased two more kits that are larger and more detailed than this one.
If you are new to wooden model ship building, I would also recommend the purchase of a couple reference books. I purchased two... "Ship Modeling From Stem to Stern," by Milton Roth & "Ship Modeling...
