Takes you step by step through setting up your own solar energy system
Easy to follow examples
Understand solar power math
Learn to evaluate your actual energy needs
If you want to put together a solar power system yourself this DVD is for you. Although it covers an off-grid system it is just as helpful for someone who wants to be partially on grid but would rather set up the system themselves. This is not an overview but rather programmed instruction. This DVD shows, step-by-step, how a 650-watt, off-grid, do-it-yourself solar-panel system was set up. The system partially replaced a 2-gallon-a-day gasoline-driven generator system and was estimated to pay for itself (based on the price of gas) in about 2-3 years. Starting from the ground up, it explains the importance of grounding and explains how to ground your system as you go along. Topics include: How to calculate you overall energy needs and how to reconcile them with what you have space for and what you can afford. Solar panel math is explained simply so that you can calculate your needs in terms of: batteries, inverters, panels and wiring. How to re-evaluate and reshape your energy usage to fit what you can realistically afford with solar. Choosing inverters and charge controllers. Safety issues. What wire to use and why. How to set up your battery and inverter system first, and test them as a working unit before adding solar. What to consider when choosing solar panels. The difference between setting up panels and batteries in series or parallel. Using a combiner box to add additional panels later. Choosing a generator for backup and how-to equalize your batteries. How to test the specific gravity of your batteries. How to wire your panels. Lightning grounding. As well as system layout, washing your panels once they are setup, etc. The focus here is an easy to understand explanation of how to set up and independent, self-sustaining energy system that can support most of the needs of a small off-grid home.

I just finished watching this DVD and though it was quite informative for a newbie, it was rushed (at only 1 hour) and incomplete. I feel like it would have been more useful to show an overview of each component (as he did) and then show an at-a-glance summary of the whole system from the panels to the electrical outlets.
The author/narrator seems to live in an off-grid cabin and used a gasoline generator previously. Unfortunately I think because of this, the video only covers the part of the solar installation and not the general electric installation. The panels, charge controller, batteries and inverters are discussed, but only really for his specific installation and doesn't go into much general information comparing/contrasting solutions. I.e. which inverters, charge controllers, panels, etc are best and how to find them.
But all that's just a minor annoyance. The biggest downside that because there already was an electrical system in place, virtually...
I highly recommend this if you are thinking of getting a solar system but have no idea what all you need to buy to get into it. After watching this it is much easier to not only estimate your cost (which is much less then paying someone else to do the system and setup - which more then paid for the DVD), you can decide if you want to tackle the project.
In terms of wiring up your home for off-grid living, home wiring falls into an Electrician field, the book was made for the average Joe, so expecting it to contain home wiring is a stretch as it isn't something you want to chance. I personal think extension cords and a fuse right after inverter should suit my needs. If I need a better set up in the future I would hire an electrician.
I also liked the length of the video, I couldn't imaging sitting through a 4 hour one unless I was going to get a certification afterwards.
Also worth thinking about, if you live on the gird, and get a grid tied...
