Additional Information

She was called “The Florence Nightingale of America.” From the fighting at Gettysburg to the capture of Richmond, this young Quaker nurse worked tirelessly to relieve the suffering of soldiers. She was one of the great heroines of the Union.

Cornelia Hancock served in field and evacuating hospitals, in a contraband camp, and (defying authority) on the battlefield. Her letters to family members are witty, unsentimental, and full of indignation about the neglect of wounded soldiers and black refugees. Hancock was fiercely devoted to the welfare of the privates who had “nothing before them but hard marching, poor fare, and terrible fighting.”

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

I should have read one of the reviews more carefully. If you are interested in how nurses tended to the men, or some of the medical techniques they used at the time this may not be the book for you. Ms. Hancock goes on and on about herself, which is great but I was hoping for a more well rounded account of daily activities in a field hospital. I'm afraid one doesnt get it here. You get bits and pieces, but trying to read through the entire book just to get a few nuggets here and there was tedious. What this book does do is crush the myth that only 30 year old spinsters were allowed to be nurses. Ms. Hancock was going to be turned away by Ms. Dix, but with all the wounded from the battle of Gettysburg there was no time to argue and she was able to work. I believe she was 23 at the time.

So, while this book has some good qualities, I'm afraid they aren't enough for me.
Another very informative book, but not as good as "The Journal of a Confederate Nurse". But to compare the feelings and thoughts of the two different sides was a real eye opener. Can't wait to order another book and see if there is that much difference with another Union Nurse.
Was purchased for a university project. It is so much more then I expected. Has been a great learning experience.
