I bought, read and added the US Cavalry officer John C. Cremony's true account of Life Among The Apaches to our family library. Time Life in its Classics Of The Old West did a great job of putting Cremony's true accounts through his years in the US Calvary out west with the Apaches in a nice 322 page leather bound book. Its a page burner. I read it in 2 days. The reader wants to read on and learn the real deal about the Apaches. The author tells the reader in the very beginning not to expect flashy glowing descriptive writing. Its the authors idea to give a true factual description of the events that transpired while he was with the Apache Indians out west in the 1840s- 1860s.

We lean the Apache were very superstitious, cunning, and intelligent with their own language. They were one of the very few tribes that could count with individual names to ten thousand plus. Cremony is the first white man to learn their language. We learn they were the ultimate desert camouflage... Read more
The book itself is, indeed, a fascinating first-hand account and an excellent easy read. Cremony certainly had all the tools with which to write such a book, being a journalist, surveyor and a soldier, and he performs it brilliantly - despite a couple of areas that could be arguable as to their viability, but since none of us were there... he can only tell. To anyone with the merest interest in the West and the years of Indian Wars this book is priceless and an exceedingly enjoyable read.

Be careful, however, because the leather bound issue is not the one I received. So be specific if that is what you want. For me, though, it did not so much matter since the words are the same and the book not for presentation but for research.
This is a soldier.s narrative of events he was a part of in NM and AZ in mid 19th century. His courage is extraordinary. His recall of confrontations with his Apache adversaries is invaluable to understand these primitive and resourceful people who claimed the territory as the white man moved in and took it away.
