Additional Information

When he was four years old, doctors told Duane Hale's parents that their son had Spinal Muscular Atrophy and that he wouldn't live past his teens. That was forty-two years ago and he has now outlived some of those doctors.

What happens to a rambunctious little boy whose disease turns him into a man who can't move? How does such a man graduate high school as Student of the Year, work twenty years for the police department, buy a house, get married, father and raise a son?

This is the story of a man and the strength he derives from his family and his community.

Even as the disease paralyzes more of his body every day his spirit stays strong and Life Rolls On.

This is a very powerful and compelling story of one person's struggles and triumphs with a debilitating neurological disorder called SMA. This book is easy to read, filled with humor yet very profound. The story portrays Duane's life journey over the last 40 some years: his life before SMA, when the symptoms suddenly appeared and diagnosis was made at an early age, through the period of somewhat normal life, increase in weakness and loss of muscles over time to presently being confined to bed 24/7. Yet, he beats the odds so many times and in so many ways. He accomplishes more than most able bodied people are able to accomplish. The book concludes with his present victory that consists of his life being fulfilled by the love of his son and his wife who are constantly by his side. The most impressive thing is that although Duane is someone who had struggled with weakness, falls and loss of ability to do much with his body, he spent his whole life being someone who was helping... What a FANTABULOUS book!! I moved to Lindale in the late 90s and it was always great to see Duane rolling along through town in his chair; which only meant he was doing things for himself and not needing someone to do it for him; if he could do it, he did it himself! Although I didn't know who he was until I asked one day and was told, I've never had the opportunity to personally visit with him, turns out his best friend is married to one of my best friends!! So two days ago I downloaded his book on my Kindle, I am almost finished with it today (only because I work FT and don't have a lot of time to read). I have laughed and cried throughout this entire book. I simply cannot put it down (unless I am forced to). What an AMAZING story of his life. I will be sharing this book with a 17 y/o friend of mine who recently became paralyzed through a tragic accident. Although their stories are not the same of how they became where they are today, the situation is the same. It is my... Read more
If there is a parking place for "People With Special Abilities" Duane can park there.
As i read "Life Rolls On" I found many of the stories familiar and parallel to my own life. Small town, respected,high-school situations and a girlfriend, the importance of friendship and the desire to serve others. Looking for work, an auto accident or two, falling in love and raising a family. I have even fallen down a few times. The difference is I have always had the use of two strong arms and legs. Duane has done all of these mostly with only a strong and determined mind.
In an incredible short time Rich Ochoa and Duane Hale have produced a life story that crosses the disability barrier and reveals the tenacity of a man who does not think of himself as disable but thinks of himself as able to accomplish, to the limit of what his body and mind can tolerate.
I kept hearing my dead Dad in the background with one of his favorite sayings, "I had no shoes and did complain, until I met a... Read more
