Having had mixed success with these AC electronic transformers, I dove in and decided to figure out exactly what's up with them. Here is what I learned, particularly for landscaping uses, but this applies to any use.
These are "AC Electronic Transformers" under the LighTech brand name, a product of General Electric (GE). They convert 120VAC into 12VAC/30KHz (30,000-Hz) This higher frequency means that you'll need a volt-meter that measures true RMS AC voltage ratings if you want to get an accurate measurement of the voltage on the secondary side of the device.
SPECIFICATIONS Much of the information for this review came from the data sheet which I found online in PDF format. To find the datasheet google "let151-12 pdf" and it pops up in a couple of places. I know this is a GE product because the pdf has a website link on it in the bottom right corner for [...] which if you type it takes you to GE's lighting page.
Just thought I would pass on something I learned to other DIY-ers. The output from these transformers is at a high frequency. My true-RMS meter would only see a few millivolts (AC or DC), but 12 volts of power was all there for an incandescent load. If you are using a voltmeter to check your install, you probably will not see the voltage on the meter.
We have 5 halogen 20W lights suspended in our kitchen. The power supply went out. Very detectable by the smell. A replacement price for the power supply was anywhere from $149.95 + S&H, another $19.95, to over $185 and free S&H. This transformer is an exact replacement from the same Mfgr. that supplied the lighting Mfgr.
Once you have the new transformer go to the big box home store by you with the pieces still together. They can steer you to what you need and if you don't have the tools they may be able to recommend a electric/electronic repair man you can use. Of course if you already looked for this tramsformer you probably can do the job. JUST REMENBER! this style transformer is self regulating amd must have a load close to it's rating to work properly. If you have 5 20W lamps don't think you can use 5 10W or LED's, damage could occur to your expensive lamps and even the transformer.
