I recently reordered this movie after not watching it for a long time. I was telling me teen son about it after watching SelfLess (Ryan Reynolds) as certain plot points had similarities and I was reminded how much I loved this flick. Limitless is a very cool movie with Bradley Cooper as the main protagonist. In it, he portrays a writer suffering from writer's block, and who is being dumped by his long-term girlfriend (Cornish) after she basically tells him he's a broke bum who isn't going anywhere in life. After a chance meeting with his ex brother-in-law, he comes to learn of a new pharmaceutical drug known for "performance enhancement," and decides to try it out. It works, oh boy does it work! And the drug makes him "limitless."
Cooper's mind begins rapidly expanding, and it is then he meets DeNiro's character; a big-wig, money thumper. The dialogue between these two becomes rather funny towards the end. I can't say much about the inbetween without...
"Limitless" has all the compelling drama and immersive storyline of any of the recent big budget scifi blockbusters, and does it with about a thousandth of the special effects. The effect of the tech on human lives is at the core of all the best scifi, and this movie minimizes the scifi and maximizes the story of Morra's (Bradley Cooper) awakening. There have been a few movies made about the double-edged sword that high IQ can be (Little Man Tate, A Beautiful Mind, Charly, and even Back ToThe Future) and ' Limitless' seems to borrow from them all. Morra can see patterns in data on a computer monitor that his mind is adding to it, and sometimes the data he's juggling in his head seems to be projected on the walls of the room he's in. Similar to the plot of 'Charly', the increased intelligence can go away, also, but in this film, when Morra slides back to his mundane (but reasonably intelligent yet self-sabotaging} mind, it is portrayed as leaving him in situations he...
The acting saved this movie. Bradley Cooper came off like a New York native and kept the pace up until the bitter end. De Niro, although master of his craft, was restrained by a smaller, less dimensional part. Being a De Niro fan, I would've loved to see more from him in a more dynamic role.
The movie itself is another drug movie, with a formulaic drug movie plot: Loser finds drugs, drugs are good, drugs get an awesome life, something bad happens (cops are on the trail, bad guys are trying to get money/drugs or both, guy tries to figure a way out), then main character either dies or manages to get out of the game.
I did enjoy the brief insider looks into philosophical premises though. Human being really only do use a small port of our brain and mind and this movie does attempt to answer, "what if we used all of our brain?"
I've known people in grad school who got their hands on adderall and modafinil and had the same ride this guy did. Other...
