This book started off a little slow for me. I also wondered about the style and what King was up to with this novel, for somehow, it didn't seem like his writing. Then the storyline picked up' and I mean really picked up. How does one access an alternate reality? How does one travel to the world right next door that is gorgeous and so dangerous as the sun starts to go down. It's a world full of laughing horrors and an unthinkable long beast, but a world Lisey travel to in order to save herself from the real monsters who live in our world.
This book has stayed with me long after I have finished it. There is so much to think about, and one of the things I think about is love and the lengths some would go for it. I have heard that this is King's favourite novel. I think it is my favourite, too, and that is saying a lot from a long time King fan who started reading his work in the late seventies. I highly recommend this book!
I'm sure that everyone else who adores all things Stephen King has already read and reviewed it. Where was I? Somehow I missed this one. I'm so glad I found it now because I think it's one of his very best. This is a warm, character driven story that is all about love and family. I was so touched by the way Mr King demonstrated the inside language and mythology of family. Every family has the private jokes and inside phrases that are unique to only the family. They were prominent in this story. They were very effective. In this story the magical elements so prominent in all King stories were really enlisted in serving the characters, not vice versa. The relationships were the center of the story, not the magic. Don't waste time reading my review, if you missed this one. Read the book. Read it right now. It's fabulous.
I never thought I'd write a negative review of a Stephen King novel. I've enjoyed so many of his books, especially "The Stand," "IT," and "Misery," which are my hands-down favorites. But 200 pages into "Lisey's Story" I simply could not get myself to continue reading. What a disappointment from one of our master storytellers! It's among the worst books I have ever read---or maybe THE worst because I couldn't even finish it and I regret the time I wasted on it. The writing is beyond "smucking" awful. The way the cluttered details are doled out is tedious, the made-up language is annoying, the run-on sentences jarring, causing me to suspend my disbelief numerous times. What a thoroughly unenjoyable experience. The only other book I've disliked with the same vehemence was John Kennedy Toole's "A Confederacy of Dunces," but at least I finished it. With "Dunces" it was a matter of hating the main character, not the writing...
