Local Color is a relaxing book to read. The writeup is light and breezy. The pictures are lovely, watercolour swatches are pastel-like in colour scheme. It's the kind of book that you may like if you're also into books from Nigel Peake and Sara Midda.

This book from artist and designer Mimi Robinson invites you to slow down to observe familiar surroundings and record the colours that you see each day for inspiration. The pages are filled with mostly colour swatches created by Robinson with accompanying photographs to show what she saw. The swatches look wonderful. There are just a handful of paintings only.

There are some travel stories, actually they are more like descriptions, flowing descriptions of the colours of places and scenes Robinson has been to, seen and captured. Occasionally, there are some exercises and tips that gives you ideas on what you can do to create your own swatches, where to find inspiration or... Read more
I really liked this book because it is about about process, and, as many people involved in creative pursuits will tell you, it’s the process that counts. The initial process here is “seeing,” using your eyes to pick up all the nuances of color in the scene you want to paint -- not as easy as it sounds.
The next process, creating watercolor swatches of those very colors, tests and verifies your individual color perceptions. Since every person sees colors differently, one person’s swatches of a particular scene may not match another’s swatches. This process -- creating your own watercolor formulas for the colors you yourself see -- is very satisfying in itself and, even better, a unique preparation for the work to come. Good book.
I love this book!
Artist and author, Mimi Robinson, says that, "What we see in any given place reveals its special spirit through its collection of colors".
Her book, Local Color, teaches us to really observe the colors we see, and then to record them by painting simple but beautiful watercolor "palettes". The possibilities are limitless as you start to notice color more and more and, happily, it can be done with a minimum of supplies. What a great way to record and remember a travel experience, the colors of a foggy forest, or even a blossom in your own back yard....
The author includes pictures of palettes she painted on her world travels for inspiration, fun exercises (such as a color walk), and instructions on how to get started. I would highly recommend this book.
