I travelled the Trans-Mongolian Route from Beijing to Moscow in June and July 2012. The book's 4th edition was released just some months earlier in April 2012.

The book has relatively good information of Beijing, which I think many can use as a starting point to plan their trip. However, the same information and more on history can be gotten from most other new guide books. Consequently, my own reason to buy the LP book was to get the newest information regarging the cities and towns around the Trans-Mongolian route.

In China the second most important city along the route is Datong, and it's importance has been also noted by the government as a growing stop-over city for tourists. The chapter concerning this city was a huge disappointment, and I have to say it dropped all expectations concerning the rest of the book. I think the authors may have been to the city some 5 to 10 years ago, but not between the previous releases of the guide book. I'll point out some... Read more
If you're looking at this book, then you realize that you're going to embark on adventure of a lifetime. I did this trip in 2009, and it was amazing. Having said that, this is a good book to get started with, although I'm not sure about the Kindle version of this book.

When compared to my older version of the book I used, Trans-Siberian Handbook, 8th: Eighth edition of the guide to the world's longest railway journey (Includes Siberian BAM railway and guides to 25 cities), this book has more photos and background information but I didn't feel comfortable with how the itinerary tips were laid out. But the LP guide does have better coverage of what to do during your stops. The LP guide also seemed to make you want to go during summer, but I think the real adventure is to do a trip like this over the winter, getting you to feel and... Read more
I bought this as a paperback edition and not the Kindle one. I would figure the Kindle edition is a bit harder to use properly. Anyway, the book is a fairly good guide to the whole experience, which is the Trans-Siberian Railway. I bought this book to take it with me for the trip will go through Moscow-Irkutsk-Ulan Bator and finally to Beijing. I have read a lot of information on the cities and buying tickets etc. and got this just for having all the info within the same covers. It has all the basic information about the cities you will pass by, visa information, traveling to/from and so on. It also has some nice little tips on what to do and what not to do. If you're considering doing the trip, this Lonely Planet guide is a safe bet.
