** Third edition! Scroll down to see what's new. **

Security specialist Gat Burroughs died once and he'll be damned if he lets it happen again. Unfortunately, somebody is determined to kill his client, a washed-up star named Max Prince, and isn't afraid to go through Gat to do it.

Is it Max's debauched granddaughter and heir? Is it the deadly Suerte y Muerte, a cult that kills to steal good luck? Is it Max's own lawyer and manager, James Jerome?

And how on earth did the would-be assassin get past Max Prince's top-grade AI, the one that's adopted the likeness of computer pioneer Alan Turing?

Gat will have to follow the clues through L.A.'s underworld, the slums of Mexico City, and his own guilty past to find the surprising answer.

- current work in robotics behind the Dogware, including nanorobotics, swarm robotics, and the military application of robots

- the scary reality behind the emerging infectious diseases that cause sudden quarantines in 23rd century Los Angeles

- the real science that may one day permit the uploading of a human consciousness into an artificial body

- the historic computer genius behind the fictional AI in Luck and Death, and

I feel a little bad because if I were reviewing this book as an action mystery ala Tom Clancy this book would get five stars plus. Unfortunately Amazon has a one dimensional rating system for my poly dimensional tastes. If you like Baen books this book is for you. The additional "facts in the fiction" writing is a great sci-if add on. I learned something new in five of the six chapters. I've been obsessed with Alan Turing since the 80s. This chapter was good enough that I may buy the printed book if I can find the right person to share the book with.

I'm saving my five star rating for books like Neuromancer, Schismatrix, Dune, Stranger in a Strange Land, etc. that change my paradigm. I rate this book as good as much of Asimov (Caves of Steel), Scalzi (Old Mans War) or Card (Enders Game). There are a bunch of teasers at the end of this book. Buy it, and see if you can resist the others!
(Disclaimer: The author is a friend and a partner in a business I operate. I have no financial interest in the success of this book, and in fact, any such success will probably just distract the author from the work we need him to do. So by all means, buy this book, recommend it to friends, and ruin me in the process.)

If you made a Venn diagram for the intersection of "page-turner" and "intelligent book", you'd have two circles barely touching at the edge. But zoom in on that edge (keep zooming, further) and you'd see the tiniest overlap... and in the middle of that overlap, you'd find Luck & Death.

This is one of those rare books that's willing to take you on a fun ride -- without assuming you're a dunce for *wanting* a fun ride in the first place. In practical terms, that means you'll get to read about nanite attack dogs, secret military drugs, "decanted" souls, luck-stealing cults, and spider gods living in abandoned malls. But you'll get to do it against the... Read more
Luck and Death At The Edge Of The World by Nas Hedron is a first person sci-fi mystery about Gat Burroughs, a security specialist for hire who is employed by Max Prince, a paranoid, washed up superstar, to improve his security and find out who tried to kill him. The attack seems impossible with the high tech security system Max owns, and every clue Gat uncovers only leads to more questions. With people trying to murder Gat and no evidence pointing to a suspect, Gat must make choices that put his life in danger. Will he find his killer or will he end up on the slab with the other victims.

I'd like to start with my first impression of the book before reading anything other than the description. I liked the plug for the book; it made the book sound interesting. I'm not really into mystery books, but it was set in the future in an interesting sci-fi world, so I thought that might keep me interested. The cover didn't appeal to me. After reading the book, I can see how it relates... Read more
