Lunatic Harness is quite a nice blend of ambient synths and drill n bass/trip hop. Catkin and Teasel, Secret Stair (both parts), Hasty Boom Alert, and Midwinter Log are examples of µ-ziq's best explorations into mesmerizing synth passages while tracks like Lunatic Harness show the crazy yet still musically-intact side of him. However, Approaching Menace is an example of how µ-ziq tends to repeat himself too much. In this track, he does vary with patterns and over time raises percussive tension, but this doesn't make up for how overplayed it began to feel over a span of 7 minutes. Overall, this album is a good example of how drill n bass can be presented in a nostalgic way, yet µ-ziq sometimes forgets that variety is still nice at times to have.
One of my favorite IDM/Drill N' Bass albums. It reflects both sophisticated musical experimentation and setting an eerie and engaging atmosphere, without losing the playful and exploratory theme of the genre. Unlike many albums of it's type, the variety of songs are less arbitrary, and more focused on taking the listener on a musical journey. For this reason, each time I listen to this album, it evokes different thoughts and emotions, and has taken on a very contemplative nature for me. If you're looking for something unique, this is the album for you.
I first heard of Mike Paradinas (u-ziq) on an online broadcast of a show he did with Amon Tobin in 1997 (I think.) Most of the stuff he spun comes off of this album so I had to have it. I am a fan of electronic music, more so the emotive, experimental end rather than huge, dumb big beat. Lunatic Harness is now one of my favorite picks from my collection. You've never heard such textured and touching sounds behind what is some of the most edgy drill-n-bass ever but to plastic. Strategically placed bass breaks and interwoven sound scapes make this a rather moody work (see 'Hasty Book Alert,' 'Secret Stair' and 'Catkin and Teasel'.) The title track displays some outright wicked beat-boxing along side some scattered beats racing along before dropping you into a rather flowery, upbeat movement before pummeling you with more bass beats. If you want a varied, introspective electronic work, this is what you're looking for.
