A brilliant crime novel and prequel to the acclaimed BBC series by the show’s creator and sole writer
Meet Detective Chief Inspector John Luther. He’s a murder detective with an extraordinary case-clearance rate. He’s obsessive, instinctive, and intense. Nobody who ever stood at his side has a bad word to say about him. And yet there are rumors that Luther is bad—not corrupt, not on the take, but tormented. After years of chasing the most depraved criminals in London’s gritty underworld, he seethes with a hidden fury that at times he can barely control. Sometimes it sends him to the brink of madness, making him do things any other detective wouldn’t and shouldn’t do.
Luther: The Calling, the first in a new series of novels featuring DCI John Luther, takes us into Luther’s past and into his mind. It is the story of the serial killer case that tore his personal and professional relationships apart and propelled him over the precipice—beyond fury, beyond vengeance, all the way to the other side of the law. Is Luther a force for good or a man hell-bent on self-destruction? Edgar Award–winning writer Neil Cross has created one of the most compelling characters in modern crime fiction. Luther: The Calling is a compulsively readable novel by the writer hailed by The Guardian as “Britain’s own Stephen King.”

The caveat I must state up front re my rating of 5 stars is: I could not read the book all the way through, because it was too scary and creepy. However, I feel this is probably for many readers, and for fans of Luther especially, a point in its favour, and I really didn't want to take away from the book's rating just because I wasn't personally up to the challenge. I still keep thinking about it and kind of want to go back and finish it, but I'm nervous about having nightmares. I'm a huge fan of the TV series, which also scares the crap out of me sometimes (two words: "the attic"). This is a standalone novel and thus not a retread of a story line one would already know from the TV series. Highly recommend for those with a slightly higher tolerance for being scared silly. P.S. The book reminded me a lot of those by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling), in its intensity and creep factor.
The press for this book steered readers to believe this would give more background on the character Luther. Yes it did give a story line that included what lead up to the opening moments of Luther Season one. However the rest of the book was just the author taking scenes from episodes from several seasons and balling them is this book. Anyone who is a fan of Luther and watched the series will see this book is just a badly written and boring rehash of snipets from the series. It gives no "extra" background into Luther....who is a very complex character. I do not know why this book was written, except to entice fans of Luther to buy. I guess it is easier to write a screenplay than a novel.
As a fan of the BBC AND of Crime stories, Luther seemed like a perfect match for me to add to my digital ‘to do’ list. Streaming currently on Hulu Plus, I knew it was something I wanted to see—and boy, am I glad I did. Idris Elba, the man whom plays the titular character, plays a perfect tortured detective. He knows people, and he knows how they work. He has an almost preternatural sense when it comes to solving a crime. Luther: The Calling comes as a prequel to the riveting BBC series.
London is in uproar, someone has stolen a baby from the womb. Ace detective John Luther and his team of crack investigators try to follow the trail of a dangerous thief. But, when the baby turns up dead and the killer known as John Black pins it on the police, Luther takes it personally. And when ‘John Black’ escalates, killing a family and their au pair (but kidnapping their youngest daughter—leaving his son at the crime scene for dead), Luther has to use...
