I've been making dashi from scratch for a while and have avoided dashi powders because most on the market are nothing much more than MSG. But I got curious about this brand and was glad I ordered it. 1 package in 3 cups of water makes a rich, smoky broth that's way better than anything I've made so far. The aroma is exactly like when you toss a big handful of bonito flakes into simmering water. Amazing stuff, will definitely buy again.
If you're into Japanese food and don't want to master the art of making a great dashi (one of THE essential ingredients in this cuisine), this is the stuff you want. It makes astoundingly good miso soup, nabeyaki udon, and can turn a lack luster ramen into a meal you'd pay $12.99 for in a restaurant.

I have not tried this yet as I gave the first one I ordered to my Mom. She used it to make Miso soup and reported that it was "to die for." The second one was delivered to my work yesterday. Conveniently, my cube neighbor is Japanese so I asked her to read the label to see if it has MSG. "Sure does!" she said. "Japanese love MSG." While I would prefer it didn't, it is not a deal breaker for me, especially since making my own stock is a daunting task. I AM curious, however, to know if the other reviewers claiming this doesn't have MSG can actually read Japanese....
We can get fish stock powder at our local asian food store at a fraction of what this cost. This brand dissolves to a lighter broth that is also not as rich tasting as our local brand. There is no english instructions or writing for those that need a little help.
