Arriving by ship into the Monte Carlo harbor at, or after, dusk is an awesome experience. You'll see the lights of the Principality sparkling and twinkling throughout the mountains and glistening in the harbor. And right before your eyes is the extravagantly lit Grand Casino. If you arrive during daylight hours, you will be spellbound by the sight of one magnificent yacht after another competing for space in the little harbor. On top of the Rock, is Monaco-Ville. The old town is tiny (only three kilometers long--less than two miles) and sits on a large rock which houses the Prince's Palace, city walls, gardens, 19th-century Cathedral, the Parliament building, and Oceanographic Museum. Be sure to take time to walk over and look at the harbors on either side. The view is spectacular! And visit The Cathedral and royal tombs where Princess Grace and Prince Rainer were married and buried. The tombs are located behind the alter (follow the crowd). Her tomb is on the left and we found it quite touching. Grace's tomb is the only one honored daily by fresh flowers. She was much beloved by the Monegasques.. and the world Stroll down Avenue Saint-Martin; the world-famous avenue with its outstanding cliff-side gardens so perfect for relaxing. Continue down Saint Martin and visit the Oceanographic Museum, an imposing neo-classic Edwardian structure perched dramatically on a cliff and faces the sea. After you admire the amazing architectural design, venture inside to enjoy two floors of marine life, sea creature skeletons, and a shark lagoon. Then treat yourself to refreshments in the restaurant at the top – La Terrasse – with a spectacular view of Monaco and the Riviera. Then as you descend from Monaco-Ville, of course you’ll have to stop by The Monte Carlo Casino located in the heart of Monte Carlo in Casino Square fronted by the impressive round flower bed and fountain. The Casino de Monte Carlo is a big draw with visitors... just remember -- residents of Monaco live tax-free thanks to the revenue that is generated from tourism and gambling, which says a great deal about your odds of winning! Still, you can't visit Monte Carlo without a small donation. If you have time, walk part of The Monaco Grand Prix route, one of the most exciting and prestigious Formula One races in the world. And if you have any money left.. The Hotel de Parishas is an elegant restaurant for dinner!. You might even run into some of the "rich and famous!†As for shopping, you may not be able to shop at the likes of Cartier, Chopard, Van Cleef Arpels, Bulgari, Piaget, Repossi… but there are plenty of souvenir shops around to bring some wonderful inexpensive remembrances of this one-of-a-kind tiny kingdom back home.
