There are different qualities in t-shirts like there are in bed sheets. The higher the thread count, the better the garment. With cotton, the "singles" count refers to the thread weight that is used. The higher the thread weight number, the finer and softer feel of the shirt. This gives off a soft feel similar to a "combed cotton" shirt. When a higher thread weight number is used, the thread is finer and a tighter weave can be achieved, which keeps the slim fit look in the garment. Therefore, a 30 single shirt would be thinner and lighter than a 20 single shirt than an 18 single shirt, etc. The typical cotton t-shirt is approximately 18 singles. It has a more rugged feel to it and heavier weight, definitely not too enjoyable to wear. 20 singles t-shirts are slightly better, but not by much. 30 singles t-shirts are much better shirts, softer, last longer, and are a better overall fit.
