"It's not merely good, it's foundation-shaking." -Seth Godin
From his unique vantage point as editor-in-chief of Make magazine, the hub of the do-it-yourself movement, Mark Frauenfelder takes readers on an inspiring and surprising tour of the vibrant world of DIY.
Frauenfelder spent a year trying a variety of offbeat projects such as keeping chickens and bees, tricking out his espresso machine, whittling wooden spoons, making guitars out of cigar boxes, and doing citizen science with his daughters in the garage. His whole family found that DIY helped them take control of their lives, offering deeply satisfying alternatives for spending time together. Working with their hands and minds helped them feel more engaged with the world around them.
Frauenfelder also profiles fascinating "alpha makers" leading various DIY movements and grills them for their best tips and insights. He offers a unique perspective on how earning a few calluses can be far more rewarding than another trip to the mall.

The story is engaging and makes you want to learn more about what you can built or fix yourself. Recommended for anyone who wants to understand a little about the spirit behind the Maker movement.
The book is full of humorous observations and anecdotes about failed endeavors. In a nutshell, it advises that you should not fear failure when you try new things. I enjoyed most of the book.
The author did devote entirely too much time to whining about his doomed chicken raising experience. (Short version: chicken munching critters 100% kill rate; chickens 0% survivors.)
If you are looking for a book about cheerleading for cigar box musical instruments and hacking espresso machines, look no farther. If however, you seek something that covers setting your pants on fire while welding, it is best to move along...nothing to see here.
I've been passively involved in the Maker community for a while. This was one of my first purchase that revolved around that community. While the book is well written and does provide some entertainment it didn't really offer me anything beyond that. One of the things I'm finding out about the community and like wise the book is that if your from a Midwest farm town then a lot of what the Maker community is offering is stuff "we" have been doing for longer than I have been alive. However I do think that what this book has to offer is very important and should be read. Especially in large metro areas. So I rated this book as OK because this is a review about my experience with it, but I do want to make it clear that your mileage may vary. There was an especially long chapter about espresso/coffee neither of which I drink nor do I find the machines that make them quite as .... lets say... romantic. This book was probably not written with me in mind which is why I rated it "OK" but...
