Additional Information

Malaria kills nearly one million people each year. Hundreds of millions more are sickened by the disease, and many of them are permanently disabled. Billions are spent each year to understand it. Researchers know the molecular details of the interaction between the mosquito and our own red blood cells, and the myriad ways in which malaria impacts the global economy and the advancement of humanity. But what of the public? Though its story is told in thousands of articles and in hundreds of books, many in the developed world are unaware of how prevalent malaria still is. Malaria, Poems testifies to the importance of bridging the chasm between science and art. It adds thread to a tattered and tragic global narrative; it is poetry’s attempt to reawaken care in a cold case that keeps killing. According to Cicero the aim of the orator is threefold: to teach, to delight, and to move. Poets during the renaissance embraced this idea, and Malaria, Poems reinvigorates it. Allen Ginsberg called for a poetry of social consciousness, a “bare knuckle warrior poetics.” Cameron Conaway, a former MMA fighter, offers Malaria, Poems both as a response to Ginsberg’s call and as a new call to contemporary poetry.

I was hugely impressed when I came across Malaria, Poems. This collection really is a moving and powerful feat of the empathic imagination. Poems such as 'Still Born' take us into minds and lives that most of us barely or rarely think about, and the result is both shocking and inspiring. Reading these poems made me realise that poetry can be as much about social justice as about aesthetic pleasures and emotional insight. I read Conway's poems alongside Leslie Jamieson's superb essay collection, The Empathy Exams, and they were excellent companions.
I'm not a judge of great poetry, but I did like the poems in this collection. More importantly, though, they effectively raise awareness of a deadly disease that is all but forgotten in the US. I especially liked pairing the poems with headlines--some informative, some misleading--drawn from other publications. Having spent a fair amount of time in malaria areas, I understand the danger of this disease. The author is to be commended for helping the work toward eradication.
As the title promises, Conaway throws open the door with a long-overdue humane dedication of poetry and education regarding a deadly infectious disease. This inspiring, assertive compilation assaults its readers with the awareness that malaria is still alive and wreaking constant havoc. This book is an impassioned reminder that we cannot look away while such a complicated plague is still attacking the citizens of our world.
