Additional Information

A starry-eyed young beauty, Marjorie Morgenstern is nineteen years old when she leaves New York to accept the job of her dreams-working in a summer-stock company for Noel Airman, its talented and intensely charismatic director. Released from the social constraints of her traditional Jewish family, and thrown into the glorious, colorful world of theater, Marjorie finds herself entangled in a powerful affair with the man destined to become the greatest-and the most destructive-love of her life.

Rich with humor and poignancy, Marjorie Morningstar is a classic love story, one that spans two continents and two decades in the life of its heroine. This unforgettable paean to youthful love and the bittersweet sorrow of a first heartbreak endures as one of Herman Wouk's most beloved creations.

Although most of this novel takes place before WW2, the heroine could be any girl, living in any time. Marjorie is a pretty teenager from a loving, conservative family. She wants to be different, but doesn't REALLY want to rebel in a big way. She dreams of being an actress without really knowing what that dream entails. She has SOME talent, but not a LOT of talent. She is intelligent, but doesn't really apply herself to her studies-she really prefers boys to schoolwork. She is passionate but prudish. She is witty but not streetsmart. In essence, Margie is in many ways a typical girl on the brink of womanhood-and hardly a subject worthy of a novel. But Herman Wouk takes the reader so deeply into her thoughts and her life that the reader becomes absorbed into her story. Marjorie tries to enter the acting world, and also has a love affair with a brilliant but failing young songwriter. These simple facts are embellished to create a beautifully intimate novel that has the power to make... Read more
I was prompted to read this book when it was mentioned in "The End of Your Life Book Club." I had read Wouk's 2 classics - "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" - many years ago and loved them both, so I expected this to be a good, old-fashioned engrossing saga. Unfortunately, Marjorie can't hold a candle to those other books. It was interesting to read a coming-of-age novel written in the 50s and compare what was considered to be somewhat scandalous behavior back then to current standards. However, somehow I never really liked Marjorie, and I REALLY didn't like her great love, Noel Airman. The book was too long, and in the end, I was disappointed. Try Wouk's other novels instead.
Everyone's life is too short and too narrow to learn and experience all the pleasantly stirring emotions and insights that are within his or her capacity. Therefore we must live supplemental lives vicariously through the books we read.

This was an audio book and the narration was unbelievably good!

Moreover the more real life we lead, the more we can derive from the books we expose ourselves to.

Marjorie Morningstar is a wild child under her authentic veneer of middle-class Jewish conventionality. Marjorie becomes love-sick over a worthless lothario. And there lies a tale of woe for her and those who love her.

One of the lessons for young single men is this: If you can't make any romantic headway with a sweet young woman despite your abundance of stirling qualities and virtues, it could be that object of your attentions is irrationally love sick over a charming but useless bum.

Another lesson is this: If you have a sister or a... Read more
