i revere matcha as a preacher would revere his bible. i have had hundred plus dollar an ounce gems to your fifteen to twenty dollar an ounce daily bowls. just like wine, matcha has its place and moment where a certain type or grade enhances your moment of occasion. now taste is unequivocally subjective so do not let my review have any bearing on whether you order this or not. koyamaen offers a nice array of matchas and seasonal matchas. the first koyamaen tea i ever tasted was their top tier, "tea from heaven". while it was elegant, complex and rich, it was missing something that i couldnt quite put into words or thoughts. since then i have had around four or five other koyamaen matchas, some for koicha and some for usucha. i have never been wowed by their offerings but still find a fair amount of their teas solid and balanced. i had a gift card to amazon so was surprised to see this brand offered. i never tried this wako so decided to delve in. first issue was upon...
You can tell it is a high quality product and it has that slightly bitter, earthy flavor that matcha is supposed to have. I like to mix it with cold water and enjoy a shot in the morning. Great way to start the day!
When my matcha addiction began I did a lot of research to find the best tasting and most authentic matcha that is readily available in the states. I was thrilled to find that the award-winning Marukyu Koyamaen brand was available on Amazon with Prime shipping! I can't bring myself to splurge on some of the higher-grade matchas this brand has to offer, so I've been making my way through the more economical grades to find a favorite.
Aorashi: Classic matcha flavor. Slightly bitter with a strong earthy undertone. Nothing super special but still goes down smoother than other American produced matchas I've tried. Organic Green Mark: Fresh and slightly sweet. It's definitely my favorite so far of the two. I'm not sure if this accurately describes it, but the flavor is slightly reminiscent of the sweetness you smell in freshly cut grass.
I will continue to update my review as I try different flavors down the line!
