The Champions was an off-beat idea that almost made it. This Omnibus sized Masterwork collects all seventeen issues of The Champions own comic and five other comics which. either featured The Champions or just The Angel and Iceman soon after their team break up. In total you get 22 stories of which two of them are oversized Annuals and the book runs over 450 pages. So it could have easily been divided into two $75 editions instead of one $100 volume.
The art had been beautifully restored and recolored using the original coloring as a guideline and printed on slick heavy paperstock for an enduring quality. The binding is top top notch with excellent reproduction. Tony Isabella, creator and original scribe does an informative introduction. The extras include a generous dose of original art and trade paperback covers.
The concept was created by Tony Isabella during a pitch meeting in 1975. A time when Marvel was looking to greatly expand their books...
Writer Tony Isabella's introduction gives us a historical perspective on how the super team was created. Where else could you see Hercules in charge of an eclectic group of heroes like Ghost Rider, Black Widow, Black Goliath, The X-Men's Angel and Ice Man all together in one mighty magazine? We get to see the artwork of many Marvel superstars like John Byrne, Don Heck, Bob Hall and the late, great George Tuska. It lasted only seventeen issues. However Marvel has included all the crossover issues, especially the Incredible Hulk Annual that teams up Ice Man, Angel and the Hulk with art chores by John Byrne.
For it's price, if you want to avoid the more costly print version, is well worth your money. If you grew up in the seventies like I did, it's a bit of nostalgia that takes you back to a better time. Where else could you see our heroes go toe to toe with the Sentinels, a killer bee villain called The Hive and Crimson Dynamo? When I thought of how many low selling...
The Champions wasn't a particularly good comic book despite a lineup of great second-string heroes. It's like a version of the Defenders that never really jelled. Even so, it's a lot of cheesy 1970's Marvel fun. The price tag for the hardcover version is fairly hefty and the quality of the art and stories just don't justify it unless you're a total Masterworks completist, but the digital version is priced much lower (at least at this time) and I just couldn't resist it. The book works great with the Comixology app and it is all set up for guided view. If you're looking for a fun read at a low price, you could do much worse. Also, if you have a younger kid who wants to read comics but you're worried about him or her stumbling into something that's way too adult or violent then this might be a great digital collection to pick up
