The British Airways Concorde was originally part of a joint project by the French bureau of Aerospatiale and the British firm of British Aerospace. A joint product came about as a product of an agreement between Britain and France, which helped them minimize costs and conserve development resources. Two prototypes were developed as early as 1962—one for each country—but they were not to see the light of day until 1969. Minimizing air resistance through it cutting-edge design, the British Airways Concorde also featured fuel tanks ingeniously mounted throughout the large-area delta wings. These served as heat sinks for the wing assemblies during high-speed flights. Although it is the only supersonic airliner ever created and flown, the British Airways Concorde succumbed to a lack of export orders that could have guaranteed its continued production. Furthermore, economic and environmental pressures obliterated any chance of commercial success for the supersonic airliner.
