Additional Information

Japanese bamboo sculptures and baskets are celebrated with stunning detail in this art collection.

Bamboo is an exacting medium for the artist. A true artist of bamboo "bears full responsibility for every step of the creative process," according to Fujinuma Noboru, one of the artists represented in this publication. "Without splitting the bamboo and working through each of the various steps oneself," he explains, "one cannot get the 'feel' of each individual bamboo culm and know for what kind of piece it will be best suited. And there are no shortcuts in bamboo—there is no way to mechanize the process."

In this book accompanying the exhibition Masters of Bamboo: Japanese Baskets and Sculpture from the Cotsen Collection, exhibition curator Melissa Rinne, in consultation with bamboo specialist Koichiro Okada, provides an overview of this intriguing art form. She also traces the network of master-disciple influences that constitute the major lineages-or lines of artistic transmission-in bamboo art, from nineteenth-century artists through those active today. These lineages have never before been described in a systematic way, and they provide a means of comprehending Japanese bamboo work from a global perspective.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

This book is beautifully made, the images are well-photographed, and the baskets (objects) are unimaginably sublime. A steal at this under-25 dollar price.

I was lucky enough to have seen this exhibit at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco many times. I believe I visited it 10 or 12 times over the period of its display. On certain days, a Japanese master basket maker sat on a slightly raised stage making baskets as we gawkers stood nearby in amazement.

I'm a potter, and could easily relate to the beauty of the forms, and the craftsmanship of their execution.

The range of technique, material, composition, and results will astound anyone who has any interest in hand-made craft.

Highest recommendation.
This exceptionally fine book is a work of art about incredible works of art. Everything - text, photos, appendices, readings - is beautifully composed and presented. And the bamboo objects themselves are astounding.
Bamboo artists are profiled in a fine survey of bamboo art that includes discussions of artist backgrounds, basket-making history, and a major Asian Art Museum exhibition packed with varied examples of masterful bamboo construction items. These illustrate different techniques and provide lively, involving keys to the varied products and results of using bamboo. Highly recommended: a fine survey suitable for both art libraries and those centering on Asian culture and arts.
