Additional Information

The MEINL Snare Bongo Cajon is a compact cajon with high and low pitched areas similar to a bongo, but with a woody cajon sound. The Snare Bongo Cajon follows the traditional Flamenco style: A warm sound punctuated with a built-in snare mechanism. The angled wedge shape of the body makes it ergonomic and comfortable to play. It can be held between the knees, like in the traditional bongo technique. The environmentally sustainable Rubber Wood has outstanding resonating acoustic properties and is structurally durable. A smooth ebony surface covers the playing area for optimal comfort and sound. Included on this bongo cajon are small silicon rubber feet to keep the instrument from slipping on smooth surfaces.

I recently saw a band play at a local bar and the drummer was using a standard, full sized cajon. I was impressed with the great sounds that he was able to get out of a wooden box. He even let me play it a little after they were done with their set (although I have never really played the drums at all). I went right home and searched for one on Amazon.

After looking at a lot of great cajons I settled on this item. First, I liked the price; if it ended up in my closet I wouldn't feel as bad as I would if I spent 2-4 times as much for a full sized cajon. Secondly, I thought that I would be tempted to pick up the bongo more often than I would be tempted to sit on a standard cajon. Lastly, I have always loved the bongos. My father had a traditional set in the 50's and I though that they were very cool.

The first thing that I did when the bongo arrived was to start to bang on it as I knew what I was doing. Although the tones of the bongos were earthy and pure,... Read more
This is the first Cajon product as well as first Meinl product I have ever owned. I am very happy with my purchase! I have only had this for a few days but I am already driving my roomates crazy! Haha.

I think the biggest feature that sold me is the idea that you are not required to tune this Bonog Cajon as you would traditional bongos. I am more of a hobbyist and never liked the idea of taking time to fine tune a hand drum. Another positive note is the "head" is really nice and smooth. My hands are barely fatigued after 20-30 of constant playing.

Edit: I played it again this morning... I don't think it's as bulky as I originally stated. Not having ever owned a pair of bongos in the past I have nothing for comparison. It is pretty light. I think I am just getting used to holding it between my legs.
Possible downsides: I haven't had an issue yet but I can see how the very sleak and smooth surfaces all around the item can pose as a potential risk for... Read more
Does this drum sound like a real set of bongo drums? Apart from having higher and lower tones.. no.

Does it sound as good as some of the demos of this product you'll find on youtube? No. In some of those demonstrations, there is at least one really good microphone placed nearby, and the drum sounds better mic'd.

Does this product sound at least as good as the Latin Percussion equivalent of this drum? Yes, although the LP version does not have snares if I remember correctly. Does this drum sound as good as the Gon Bops bongo cajon? That one does not have snares either, and costs twice as much. However, judging by the sound samples I've heard online, the Gon Bops bongo cajon sounds better. I didn't buy that one because I didn't want to pay so much for something like this. Also, the Gon Bops bongo cajon is larger, and can't be played on one's lap without muffling the sound.
