With a pair of 40-something flat feet that were once tortured in dance shoes and have endured three surgeries, I have a hard time finding truly comfortable and supportive shoes. No more! These are the best ever lightweight hiking and walking shoes I've ever owned. Even better than my Asics Gel Foundation running shoes -- and that is saying something. These have PERFECT alignment and arch support, very lightweight, nice lacing, and amazing traction. This is my first pair of Merrell's and I may never take them off. I'm a fan.
If that's what you are looking to do with them. I had a hard time finding a review mentioning their performance as hiking shoes. I took them up rocky, steep terrain in the Adirondack Mountains. Some days the rocks were wet with morning dew...no contest for these shoes! There was a certain type of rock they slid on a little bit...the surface was not very porous like the granite I usually encounter. They are only waterproof until the mesh portion...I hiked through some tall grassy areas and discovered this downfall. No biggie though...they dry pretty quickly.
I didn't need a break in period. They were good to go out of the box. I usually wear 8.5-9, purchased these in size 9. I believe the 8.5 would have been too tight on the toe...which is not good for descending down mountains.
Sizing: I have wide feet and typically wear a 7 and the 7.5-wide was a good fit. Reviews on most shoes talk about so much about sizing because there is so much variation in American sizes, just learn your European size and look at the size chart. Size 38 has never failed me.
Comfort: These shoes are good for short hikes (2 miles), but your feel will be hurting around 5 miles, and the bottom of your feet and your toes will reallllllly hurt over 5 miles. I did some 10-15 mile hikes and my feet were dying after 5 miles in. I got some Superfeet soles and the bottom of my feet were okay on long hikes, but my toes would still hurt.
Durability: I've had these for 1.5 years now and they are pretty much done. Some time between 1 and 1.5 years, the stitching started coming off (see photo). Bottoms of shoes (tread) are still good. They recently got me through extremely muddy hikes in Hawaii. I've crossed creeks and muddy areas in these and they are not waterproof or water...
