As someone who feels Cradle of Filth's best work was probably the albums that these songs were culled from, I was excited to hear what they would come up with for this CD. After having listened through the work I am just left with a feeling of "pretty interesting, but nothing special". It just seems like they went through the motions and substituted one electric instrument for one symphonic one straight through the whole work. A lot of these songs seem "samey" and follow the originals very closely, as oppose to say, the orchestral album My Dying Bride released. Song choice is another thing that seemed somewhat odd to me. While the songs here are good, some songs off these albums are practically begging for symphonic treatment - "Black Goddess Rises", "Of Mist & Midnight Skies", "Bathory Aria" and others. This is ok for a novelty factor and you are diehard fan, but otherwise I'd steer clear, especially for the price it is.
Subtitled Songs For The Recently Dead And Arisen, CRADLE OF FILTH's latest output is "a two-disc set traversing an ethereal cinematic landscape of classical and symphonic darkness." What that means is songs from the band's first four official releases: The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh, Vempire, Dusk And Her Embrace, and Cruelty And The Beast, have been given a majestic makeover; one not all fans will approve of. Three years in the making, both discs contain the same nine songs, albeit in different running order. Disc one features Dani Filth and Sarah Jezebel Deva providing occasional narration alongside a 12-person choir, while disc two offers completely instrumental orchestral versions. The transformation of such black metal beauties as `The Forest Whispers My Name' and `The Rape And Ruin Of Angels' into a gothic horror movie soundtrack "akin to the works of film composers Christopher Young (Hellraiser) and Jerry Goldsmith (Poltergeist)," goes over only marginally well. These once... Read more
This is not a good orchestral album. I was expecting much more, especially since Dani had mentioned an actual orchestra - in fact, I was thinking that I could actually be excited for a Cradle of Filth album, which isn't really a feeling I've personally been able to experience since I got into them after their golden days were up (I heard Dusk for the first time sometime back in 06 or 07 when I started branching out into metal). My hopes were pretty much shattered when I heard this, though. It sounds as though it's been keyboarded, leaving it to sound like the soundtrack to a haunted house attraction at a Halloween-themed carnival as opposed to an epic, atmospheric music piece. And do not get me started on the annoying choral vocals. Just...ugh. This really could have been brilliant had they taken the epic masterpieces from their early, pre-Hot Topic goth career and properly converted them into orchestral pieces, but no - just like the last few records they've made, this is...
