As a new goat owner I have to say I really like this. By the time it arrived I had gotten decent at hand milking (the first two days are very frustrating, by the 3rd day you're starting to get it, by the 6th day you're an expert), but this saves a lot of wrist stress especially on my weaker hand. I'm getting about two cups per milking from a Nigerian Dwarf doe, and this gets most of the milk with me having to hand strip 2-4 tablespoons from each side. We learned that massaging that side of the udder during the process helps the milk run faster, and towards the end of the flow, GENTLY squeezing up on the front and back of that side combined with gently pulling on the syringe will help get the majority of the milk out. If you're having trouble getting or keeping a vacuum, you may need a different size syringe (I use a 35cc), and/or you may need to clip the udder and make sure the skin is damp where the syringe attaches. I pump it up to 5 lbs and wait for the milk to start flowing,...
It takes a lot of pumping with the hand pump. Even with a teat cleaning solution, it takes a while to get the milk flowing. My girlfriend and I must trade off on pumping. I am 59 years old and weak. It cannot be used by one person. To pump with one hand and get the cup aligned with the other is a real challenge. I am going to try a winemaker's cutoff clamp on the tubing. Then pump a vacuum in the jar. With the clamp close to the cup, it should be easier. It is a sealed system so it is clean. Cleaning out the tube with a real vacuum is easy. Just put the teat cup in soapy water. and start the pump. Then move the cup to a bleach solution and repeat.
I am just getting into milking my goats--with 4 kiddos under 7, one being a brand new baby, this is daunting to say the least. I got this, tried it out and suddenly feel like I can do this! I was starting to get decent at hand milking, but even still it took forever. This does a stand-up job. the pump is easy to use--you do have to pump occasionally to maintain the vacuum, but still ten times easier than milking by hand. Plus the milk stays so clean. It doesn't get everything out, so some hand stripping at the end may be necessary, but not much. I am so excited!
