Additional Information

(Book). It's 1967, the Summer of Love, and Bob Dylan is holed up in Woodstock with a group of musicians once known as The Hawks, laying down a set of recordings that will soon turn the music world on its head. These recordings the Basement Tapes would not be released commercially by Dylan at first, but would emerge in the form of cover versions by acts such as the Byrds, Manfred Mann, and Peter Paul & Mary. Together, they would inspire a homespun, back-to-basics approach in the work of the Beatles, the Stones, the Grateful Dead, and many others, while also kick-starting the entire Americana genre. In this fully revised and updated edition published to coincide with a major new documentary about the Basement Tapes and the release of the T Bone Burnett-produced Lost on the River album author and musician Sid Griffin is given unique access to a cache of more than 40 never-before-heard Basement Tapes recordings, allowing him to shine even greater light on this pivotal yet often misunderstood moment in popular music history.

I had the first edition of this book and even wrote a review of it for Amazon. Liked it, too. The Basement Tapes era is for me one of Dylan's highest achievements. I was even able to get the complete set (from Amazon) on my birthday in 2014, making it a wonderful birthday present. I saw that this book update existed, and since Sid Griffin had even written some notes for the box set, I thought an update regarding the finished release version of this material would be invaluable, though I didn't order it until a few weeks back. The book arrived and I started to read it, and immediately discovered that it had been rushed out BEFORE the box set was done. What the hell? So Sid was able to sit in somebody's office and listen to 45 "new" tracks to update his previous work on these songs. He also makes a big deal out of the Lost on the River album of other people finishing Dylan's lost typings of this era. Nothing wrong with any of that, but Lost on the River is NOT Dylan and the Band... Read more
Any book written by Sid Griffin which I have purchased are well researched on their music, highly recommended. If you bought the Complete Basement Tapes Box set then you want this book too. Have fun disecting it all, it will keep you very busy trying to understand what Bob was doing at this time in history. Very exciting and in my book, the best damn Dylan ever in his 50+ year career. Thanks Bob!
Exhaustive coverage of the Basement Tapes from huge Dylan/Band/Byrds fan Sid Griffin. Pretty much straight forward reporting, not esoteric like Greil Marcus's Invisible Republic, and pretty much the last word on all things Basement Tapes now that the box set is out. If you don't understand the mythology and depth of the Basement Tapes or are just discovering it, this is the book to read. It's all out there now, so you can use the box set as the soundtrack and actually hear what Sid's talking about.
