I'm sure every literature lover has a book that is cherished not just for its content, but for what it represents in that reader's life. Paradise Lost is definitely one of those books for me. My first exposure to Milton was in college when I blindly enrolled in a course called "Topics in 17th Century English Literature" that I later discovered was to devote itself entirely to the study of Paradise Lost. I confess that I only registered for the course because it satisfied a degree requirement and was one of the few with remaining seats. (The professor was rumored to be "too hard.") That haphazard decision on my part proved to be the catalyst for a sort of personal and intellectual awakening in my life.
Everything about the class was a unique experience, from what was taught to the way it was taught. In my other English classes, Reader Response Theory ruled the day and assigned readings consisted of novels like Loving Che, The Gifts of the Body and The Bus: Cosmic...
I was very intimidated by the book Paradise Lost and loved having Professor Ryken "take me by the hand" and walk me through it. He carefully explains the main ideas behind each main section so you can read through the sometimes difficult language and get to the heart of the story. He also includes great questions for discussion or contemplation. Very helpful!
