  • Wide range of jazz styles and composers
  • Jazz French horn
Additional Information

The French horn has a surprising history in jazz that is overshadowed by so-called "traditional" jazz instruments. Fortunately, key individuals saw the potential (as opposed to the limitations) of the instrument in jazz, and demonstrated that, when given the chance, the horn could participate as an equal. It took outstanding performers, like Julius Watkins, John Graas, David Amram, Willie Ruff, and later Tom Varner, John Clark, Vincent Chancey, Arkady Shilkloper, and many more, to show that the horn could fulfill this potential, and this recording is certainly inspired by and dedicated to them. It is also a tribute to all performers, bandleaders, composers, and arrangers who saw the value of including the horn in jazz settings. This recording is also a tribute to Central Washington University's strong jazz program. Its collaborative attitude among faculty, students, and alumni is represented on this recording. Jeffrey Snedeker has taught at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, since 1991. As a performer, Jeff has been featured at conferences of the International Horn Society, Historic Brass Society, Northwest Horn Society, Washington Music Educators Association, among others, has played concertos, recitals, and natural horn and jazz gigs all over the US, and in Canada, Germany, France, Switzerland, Finland, Taiwan, South Africa, and Australia. He has released two solo CDs, has over 50 publications on various topics, and has also been featured on recordings of the works of Douglas Hill and Lowell Shaw. His jazz credits include a critically-acclaimed solo CD, First Times, side work with Tom Gause and the CWU Faculty Jazz Ensemble, featured solos with the CWU Jazz Band I, and performances as a featured jazz soloist at conferences of the International Horn Society, Northwest Horn Society, Jazz in the Valley Festival, the Call of the Wild Festival, and other places that are open to jazz horn

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

I know the natural horn recordings of Jeffrey Snedeker but was uncertain of a jazz recording on modern horn. This CD is FANTASTIC and had no idea that the instrument was so well suited for this music - - the selections are perfect and the playing swings. I want his version of Take Five to be played at my funeral! It is more than wonderful.
My 12 year old granddaughter is studying French Horn. This was a perfect fit!
I started with "First TImes" and like this one just as much. Traditionally a classical instrument, Jeff makes music with the french horn for the rest of us.
