Additional Information

There's no such thing as “just” a mom.

Despite the routine tasks and mundane to-do lists, motherhood is anything but insignificant. God has designed motherhood as part of his greater plan to draw people to himself—instilling all women, whether called to traditional mothering or not, with an eternal purpose in nurturing others.

In this book, Gloria Furman searches the Scriptures for the mission of God in motherhood. She opens our eyes to God's life-giving promises—promises intended to empower each and every woman as she makes disciples in her home, in her neighborhood, and around the world.

Two, small children know me as "mama". That said, I don't have an abundance of time to sit down, which leads me to be snobbishly choosey in my selection of reading material. Over the past 4 months I've read about 20 books (over half of which are Christian lit, almost all of which have been good), but "Missional Motherhood" was (by far) the most impactful and enjoyable read. The book is intended to reach women in all seasons of life -- not just biological or adoptive mamas because, "... every Christian woman is called to make disciples of all nations."

I read snippets aloud to my husband, stifled laughs (so as not to wake my sleeping babe), and suffered from hand cramps because I underlined on every single page. THIS was my FAVORITE part of all:

"Do we, with glad hearts, glorify God for designing this cruciform pattern for our work in nurturing others? I mean, it's wonderful that Jesus, "for the joy that was set before him, endured... Read more
I feel a bit bait and switched on this book. If you are looking for a huge summary of the OT, you will enjoy this book, but if you are wanting to dive right in to learning about motherhood, you will feel a bit deceived. We all can all use a recap of the meta narrative of the Bible now and then, however this was not what I was looking for at the moment. The author devotes half of the book to the topic, in fairly grandiose verbiage, which is not exactly tied to motherhood. Hopefully this helps others in deciding if this book is for them.
I will start by saying that this book gave me a lot to think about. It had a lot of challenging ideas and was very different from any other christian parenting books I have read. I underlined a lot and am still thinking through a large portion of this book. I am a mother of 3, 5 and under, and realize how easily the day-to-day parenting distracts from the larger purpose of God ordained motherhood and this book helped to redirect my focus. All of this being said, I felt like the book was tough to get through. It is a lot of theology, some of which is hard to understand. I found myself reading things multiple times or reading whole paragraphs and having no comprehension of what I just read. This is not an easy to read book to motivate your parenting but instead something that will challenge you, and take a lot time to really soak in. Like other reviewers, I felt like the title and marketing of the book was misleading. If you know to expect an overview of the Old Testament and a deep... Read more
