does what it's supposed to do
This cap sucks. I bought a new 3 gallon Moeller gas tank that had this cap on it, and the vent doesn't function at all. I had the screw for the vent in the open position, and just went to check on my boat to find that the outboard well on my boat was filled with gasoline. The vent was not working, so the built up pressure was forcing fuel through the pickup tube and overfilling the carburetor bowl in my outboard, which then flowed into the outboard well. Tried unscrewing the vent more (thinking it might not be all the way open) only to have it break off. Gotta love it when a product that is designed to reduce gasoline vapors in the air ends up draining half a tank of gas into the waterway because it's poorly designed. I will probably end up just drilling a tiny hole in the cap to try to make it usable.
I purchased a Moeller Marine Products Model:6Bow 6 gallon fuel tank and this cap came standard thanks to the California Air Resources Board (CARB). I purchased this tank to do the extended run mod on my Honda EU2000i Generator. The tank itself is great and highly recommend it, but after running the generator for 2.5 hours it stalled. I looked for problems and found there was a lot of vacuum in the fuel system. I installed everything correctly and according to the instructions. Then I checked the cap and found that it wasn't letting air into the "6Bow" tank and this created a vacuum that the fuel pump in the generator couldn't overcome and caused my generator to stall. This was a little counterproductive to the extended run mod to say the least.
It took me an hour or so to figure out the best way to defeat this cap. Basically I drilled a 1/8" hole in the bottom where the "cap tether" goes into and ground down the sides of the "tether ball" a bit to allow air to flow freely...
