The purpose of this booklet, is to preserve, not only the account of that memorable occasion, but the family history it embraces, for the use and benefit of both the living and future descendants of the Matthews family.

The incorporation of the pic tures of all the children of Phineas Matthews, with a single exception, that of the one dying in infancy, was a happy afterthought, adding to the Memorial a most interesting and valuable feature.
