The Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty is a powerful tool for bushcrafters, hunters, and outdoorsmen with an extra-large ergonomic handle that has a patterned, high-friction grip making it comfortable to hold and easy to handle. The Companion Heavy Duty features a 4.1-inch (104 mm) blade of high carbon steel that is preferred in applications that demand durability. When the high carbon steel is combined with the classic Scandi grind it allows the knife to be easily re-sharpened when needed. The blade’s blunter edge angle of 27 degrees allows for maximum sharpness retention. The Companion Heavy Duty’s 3-layer injection molding and extra thick blade will perform well during high impact usage such as batoning or cutting wood. When used in wet applications, the blade should be dried after use to avoid blade corrosion and may exhibit a patina or natural discoloration over time through normal usage. You should also clean and oil your blade regularly, especially after it comes in contact with acidic foods like oranges. Includes a color-matching plastic sheath with belt clip. Overall length: 8.8 inch (224 mm); Blade length: 4.1 inches (104 mm); Blade thickness: 0.125 inch (3.2 mm); Weight w/ sheath: 4.8 oz. (135 g). Limited lifetime manufacturer’s warranty. Made in Sweden.

The knife arrived quite promptly (from Harry J Epstein Co.)- a day before the earliest predicted arrival date, in fact. :) For those who do not know, this knife, the Mora 860 ("Companion" series) MG heavy duty carbon steel, is an improved version of the Mora 840 models ("Clipper" series). The main difference is that Companion blades have a significantly longer tang. You can google images search the difference in the tang between the Clipper and Companion. I prefer the improved tang because it makes me feel more comfortable using it, and it will hold up better to rough use. The sheath is plain and simple, nothing super fancy, though it is quite durable. If you prefer a leather sheath, you can either make one yourself or buy one online (I recommend bensbackwoods[dot]com though there are many others you can choose from). Like the Clipper's sheath, it comes with a sturdy belt clip, so it is easy to put on and take off.
The knife itself is Scandinavian grind and has a...
This knife has over 240 five star reviews on amazon, is recommended for its quality and value by survival experts and is the most affordable quality knife period. Very few knives in the world enjoy such broad support and they are so reasonably priced everyone should own a Mora. The companion HD like the robust HQ and the bushcraft models have a thicker blade than standard mora knives and that thickness is constant throughout the entire spine up to the tip. This thickness combined with a wider angle to the blade makes the companion HD suitable to baton wood and other hardcore knife work. My thinner bladed Mora #1 does fine work like thin slicing onions better than the thick bladed companion HD but I prefer a blade that flexes less and the added durability. 1/8 inch is generally considered to be the minimum thickness for a good quality fixed blade knife. The sharpness of the blade is what impresses me most about mora knives. It takes a sharper edge than any other knife I...
I own many knives. I own survival, kitchen, utility, garden, pocket, all in various degrees of quality in terms of the steel and craftsmanship. Because of this, the most expensive knife I own is about $450 and the cheapest $5 (chinese stainless steal, where everything is worthless). This blade cost me $14. It is razor sharp, it cuts paper right out of the box. It holds it's edge for long periods of time without any maintenance, which beats out many blades I own that cost over $100. It's made in Sweden out of high carbon steel and therefore comes with the Scandinavian style single bevel edge, which makes it the easiest knife I own to sharpen, as it's factory angled at 10-12 degrees, which means, lay flat on the stone, tilt slightly forward, and push. These MoraKniv's are perfect for everything, one of my best discoveries thanks to a good friend I met on top of a large mountain.
Nowadays, when I'm going on a long wilderness camping trip, I throw two Mora's in my pack before I...
