This is a very touching and inspiring read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as it pushed me forward to have courage to make big life changes. The world suddenly opened up for me as I see things in different perspectives.
What Mark has done is certainly courageous and very commendable considering that he walked away from power and prestige as a rising star young business professor at Harvard and hotly sought-after business consultant. To know someone who can make the hard decisions to voluntarily leave this comfortable and extremely privileged environment and do something for the betterment of the society is certainly very inspiring and motivate each of us to pursue something bigger than ourselves and be a asset to the society.
With the current economic crisis, the worthiness of mba degrees and marketability of mba graduates have perhaps taken a beating. Some people perceived mba degrees(especially ivy-league ones) as a symbol for greed and power hungry...
In a single sentence, More Than Money is about choosing to do what you love as opposed to what earns you a lot of money. This is a powerful premise with a lot of solid arguments to back it up, so if you haven't read on the topic, More Than Money is a very good book to explore the subject. If you have read on the topic, however, there isn't all that much new and the narrative is slow to get to the point at times. Most examples in the book are personal examples of Mark Albion - they are good examples as the author had an interesting and successfull career but hardly exceptional. Towards the very end of his work, Mark Albion even admits that he loves talking about himself which the reader has probably guessed at this point of the book. So, there you have it - a self-centered author arguing how we all should focus on what we love (which most of the times means helping out the community). As ironic as it may seem, the book is nevertheless a good read.
A current MBA student, I bought this book both for inspiration and some hands-on tips. All in all I got what I bargained for, but I still think that the book was a bit thin. Having the experience and specialization of the author, I think he could have come up with more content. Perhaps in the form of more interviews and other complementary material.
Don't want to complain though - I noticed before buying that the book had about 150 pages so I knew more or less what to expect. And it was certainly worth the read, if not entirely worth the buy (this was the kind of book you could see yourself donwloading as a pdf and devouring in a couple of hours on the couch).
This book inspired me most of all to further explore my set of core values, and the importance of framing your work and life not only in terms of financial success, but also in terms of contribution, well-being and people relations.
