Overall, I like the NG series of maps. HOWEVER, some of their maps have lengths of trail segments (eg the "Three Sisters" map) and other, like the Mt Hood map here, do not. This is a key feature for quickly planning hikes. I can't stress this enough.

Otherwise, I have noticed some inaccuracies, mostly at trail junctions, across the various NG maps I have. I can only guess this is a result of "simplifying" the features for use at the large scale of the map. However, it can be frustrating and confusing when you're in the woods and expect a trail junction to be somewhere, only to find out in reality it's 0.25 miles ahead.

The good: The main reason I choose the NG maps over others for my area is that the map covers a large scale (generally an entire national forest) in a single map.

The alternative (which has trail lengths and better accuracy), is unfortunately sold as smaller scale quads. I don't really want to buy dozens of sheets of maps... Read more
Bought this map to plan a short backpacking trip, but it lacks trail mileage and I've found that several of the trails are missing or inaccurate. Not recommended.
The National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps are some of my favorite. They are not extremely detailed but do show all roads mountains, streams, lakes, etc. I love the scale as you can be hiking over a pass and look off in the far distance and see a peak and wonder what the name is all to look it up on the map. I do a lot of hiking and run a website called [...] and recommend these to everyone.
