Additional Information

As the nineteenth century comes to a close, the illustrious Vanderbilt family dominates Newport, Rhode Island, high society. But when murder darkens a glittering affair at the Vanderbilt summer home, reporter Emma Cross learns that sometimes the actions of the cream of society can curdle one's blood. . .

Newport, Rhode Island, August 1895: She may be a less well-heeled relation, but as second cousin to millionaire patriarch Cornelius Vanderbilt, twenty-one-year-old Emma Cross is on the guest list for a grand ball at the Breakers, the Vanderbilts' summer home. She also has a job to do--report on the event for the society page of the Newport Observer.

But Emma observes much more than glitz and gaiety when she witnesses a murder. The victim is Cornelius Vanderbilt's financial secretary, who plunges off a balcony faster than falling stock prices. Emma's black sheep brother Brady is found in Cornelius's bedroom passed out next to a bottle of bourbon and stolen plans for a new railroad line. Brady has barely come to before the police have arrested him for the murder. But Emma is sure someone is trying to railroad her brother and resolves to find the real killer at any cost. . .

If you enjoy Rhys Bowen's Royal Spyness series, you will definitely love this book! Instead of a poor relation to British royalty, you have a poor relation of American "financial" royalty (the Vanderbilts)! Have already preordered the next book due out in later this year!!
The debut title of Alyssa Maxwell's new historical mystery series will enthrall you with details of the gilded Vanderbilt era in Newport, RI. The heroine, a less than wealthy relative, takes it upon herself to investigate a murder when her brother is implicated in the case. Can Emma clear him of the crime which the police are so eager to pin on him? As she uncovers buried secrets, Emma risks her life to save the people she loves. Plot twists, page-turning suspense, and endearing characters will make you eagerly anticipate the sequel.
I love the Cliff Walk and all things Vanderbilt. My great grandfather was one of the suppliers to Biltmore. I've done the tours of all the houses on the Cliff Walk and Biltmore many times over. I know the family history reasonably well. I enjoy a good murder mystery. This book has all of the elements which say I should have thoroughly enjoyed the book, yet it took me 2-3 weeks of plodding through to finish it. Please realize I can usually knock out a 200-300 page book in a day or two. I never really got hooked. I had turned on "Time Remaining" on my Kindle to know how much longer until the story wrapped up and finished. I was very disappointed.... though I am ready for a return trip to the Cliff Walk to enjoy the houses and the sea again.
