Amory Ames is a wealthy young woman who regrets her marriage to her notoriously charming playboy husband, Milo. Looking for a change, she accepts a request for help from her former fiancé, Gil Trent, not knowing that she'll soon become embroiled in a murder investigation that will test not only her friendship with Gil, but will upset the status quo with her husband.
Amory accompanies Gil to the Brightwell Hotel in an attempt to circumvent the marriage of his sister, Emmeline, to Rupert Howe, a disreputable ladies' man. Amory sees in the situation a grim reflection of her own floundering marriage. There is more than her happiness at stake, however, when Rupert is murdered and Gil is arrested for the crime. Amory is determined to prove his innocence and find the real killer, despite attempted dissuasion from the disapproving police inspector on the case. Matters are further complicated by Milo's unexpected arrival, and the two form an uneasy alliance as Amory enlists his reluctant aid in clearing Gil's name. As the stakes grow higher and the line between friend and foe becomes less clear, Amory must decide where her heart lies and catch the killer before she, too, becomes a victim.
Ashley Weaver's Murder at the Brightwell is a delicious mystery in which murder invades polite society and romance springs in unexpected places.

When I read a book I look for an interesting plot and Historical mysteries are my favorite I will stay up to 3 or 4 am if I find a really good book. This mystery is quite enjoyable, the year is 1932 and you have Amory Ames a socialite, quite wealthy who wants a happy life that she presently does not have. Even her loyal servants recognize she lacks her husband’s companionship in a five year marriage. Her husband Milo’s concept of marriage is to leave her at home and spend months away gambling and carousing with other women which results in him constantly listed in society gossip columns. Her old fiancé who still has feelings for her invites her to a resort in hopes that she can talk to and influence his sister who has become deeply involved with a gentleman who seems to have the same shortcomings of Armory’s husband. The mystery and murders begin then with Armory investigating them to prove her ex fiancé’s innocence and finally...
When I started this book I thought..........Hooo boy what a snooze fest this is gonna be but..........took me awhile to get into it & when I did it was really quite engaging. I am more into the violent/noir/rugged murder mysteries than I am into "Cozies" so I had to re-adjust my reading style & sloooooooow down to try and enjoy the unfolding story line & plot developments. Some of the dialogue was silly but hey, maybe these people were kinda silly & the rules were certainly different back then a days. It did give me a nice feel for the constraints on women as well as the rather rigid rules of conduct for men. Of course these are the very wealthy people so they have the time to hang out at Hotels, dress for various daily venues & snoop into murder investigations. Let's just say that when I started the book it was a 2 star & by the end it was a 4 star so better to improve over time than vice versa!
So, this book was probably recommended to me on Amazon due to my tendency to read British period murder mysteries. I am SO glad Amazon knows me so well. I decided to move this to the front of my formidable "to read" pile for some reason. I sat down with it one evening, and stayed up for later than I have in what can only say something negative about my social life. It's fantastic. I really hope that it turns into a series, and that the author goes on to write many, MANY more wonderful books. I can't recommend this highly enough. It's fun, funny, smart, witty. If you are a fan of Agatha Christie or the many writers from the "Golden Age" of mystery this is a must read. I was really sorry to have it come to an end!
