Sony BMG has begun an aggressive reissue campaign, especially in Europe, and long-awaited recordings (like Levine's Mahler and Leinsdorf's Prokofiev symphonies) are surfacing. Here from 1968-69 are early recordings from Seiji Ozawa, who was 33 but looks like a bemused gamin of 23 in the cover photo. Before he settled comfortably -- to comfortably, as it turns out -- into a plush seat in Boston, Ozawa ahd the potential for being an exciting conductor, as witness his still-riveting account of Messiaen's Turangalila. In addition, it was pretty reckless to traipse into Reiner's incomparable CSO with Pictures at an Exhibition, a work they had recorded superbly under him.

I had this when it first came out and wore it out. I still apreciate they took the Young Person's Guide and treated it as a concert speaker.
How time flies. It does not seem very long ago that a young Seiji Ozawa took the classical music world by storm with his charisma, flair and talent. Over the years he has endured the slings and arrows of the ever discriminate classical music world. He has had many triumphs along the way.
This recording is a testament to his place as an outstanding conductor. These three concert staples are played wonderfully by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Pictures at an Exhibition and The Young Person's Guide to Orchestra were recorded at Chicago's Medinah Temple on June 18th 1967. This "Pictures" flows with lithe, lean textured vividness. It is not bloated. There is a forward momentum and the musical line is maintained marvelously from beginning to end. Ozawa brings out the poetry in the music while not allowing it to become lumpy. Grandeur and majesty are present but not pummeled upon. It is a magical performance. The orchestration is by Ravel.
"Young Person's" is given a characterful,... Read more
