Most Helpful Customer Reviews

Herbert von Karajan's digital recordings of the 1980's generally received unfavorable reviews from the critics, mainly because of the sound. These digital recordings had bright, glassy strings, an opaque soundstage, and the sound that often congested in the loud passages. In the 1990's, the DG engineers remastered these recordings for the "Karajan Gold" series. To say that they improved the sound significantly is a gross understatement.

Karajan's recordings had a reputation for sometimes being light in the bass, but this is not the case here. Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition has one of the best recorded bass drums that I have ever heard. The brass is rich and sonorous, and the top end of the music opens up magnificently. Because the Berlin Philharmonic is recorded closer than in Karajan's previous recording of Pictures and Ravel's Bolero (1966), the music doesn't sound as smoothed over as before. The Bolero gains appreciably from this closer miking, and the Ravel... Read more
Upon release, some of Herbie's digital recordings made in the Philharmonie by DG were tighter than an ant's bum-hole. With constriction came glare. To the aural relief of the cosmos, our friends in Hamburg released the Gold Edition in 1993 which was essentially a 20bit remaster. From memory, this treatment was meted out to a score of discs, much to their betterment. Transformation befell the 1986 recording of Pictures at an Exhibition: Magnus ab integro sclorum nascitur ordo ("The great order of the ages is born afresh."). Ditch-water became wine. The pungency of the bass-line also became evident and scarily so.

Pictures at an Exhibition was one of Herbie's warhorses (this is the third of four recordings). Being worlds in themselves, its vignettes are the equivalent of planetary stops to the likes of a Voyager 2. Whatever their temper, they are artfully characterised and writ large. For instance, the nostalgia of the Old Castle is unerringly conveyed whereas the tread of... Read more
My favorite recording of Pictures. Don't confuse it with Karajan's earlier recording.
